Below you can read the job descriptions of each organization!

Green Cameroon:

GREEN CAMEROON interns will focus on the following projects: working on updating our Omprakash (an international partner) profile with information from their blog found on their website; writing environmental sensitization articles; filming and developing a video coverage of GREEN CAMEROON and its activities (including short interviews and footage of field work); creating profiles for GREEN CAMEROON with other social media site where Green Cameroon does not have a profile (e.g. pinterest and badoo) and keeping their current social media profiles up to date (e.g. facebook, twitter). When interns feel they have completed the above tasks they can find extra work in the office doing taksts like filing and arranging documents and books. Internship will be concluded with a report given to YAN and GREEN CAMEROON

Rural Women's Development Center (RUWDEC):

While working with RUWDEC your main objective will be to update their blog and website with current activities of the organization. You will also be responsible for documenting their work (in the field and in the office) via video camera. By the end of the 4 week internship you will have produced an edited video showcasing their NGO and their projects. You will be expected to go into the field to help with the monitering and evaluation of their micro finance program as well as help recruit participants for their “Da Girls Initiative” program which will take place in August. You will also be mobilizing (online and in person) and sensitizing the public on this program. Internship will be concluded with a report given to YAN and RUWDEC.

Z TV:

Every week while working with ZTV your duties and objectives will change. You will start by learning about the company, broadcasting and analyzing the impact of Advocacy Journalism. Then you will be perfecting your research  and interview skills that you have learned in YAN. The 3rd week will be focused around field work – you will be going into the field and shooting. Lastly all of your work will be put together and edited for a final product which has the change of being broadcasted on television. Internship will be concluded with a report given to YAN and ZTV.

YAN:

YOUTH ADVOCACY NETWORK (YAN) interns will be working together planning and organizing the first YAN Summer Camp which is to be held 17-20 June 9:30am-4pm daily. YAN interns will have the tasks of preparing lessons, activities and games which will be taught to participants throughout the camp. These lessons will include practical and theoretical lesson while also incorporating ‘fun’ games and competitions to keep the students interested. Finally, when the camp begins, they will also be teaching and facilitating the lessons. All logistics of the camp will be arranged by the interns. Internship will be concluded with a report given to YAN.

Our very first day was quite eventful. Majority of the students came late, which was expected but no longer accepted. I made it clear to the 11 interns that this is a professional workplace and you mustn’t be late again.

First everyone introduced themselves by playing some sort of game if you would. The first person recites their name, the next follows but before he introduces his/herself – he introcudes the people(s) behind him/her. Meaning, the last person to introduce themselves has to introduce everyone else before him/her.

We quickly moved to the pala-pala field for some discussions and activities. First we went over “teamwork” and what it mean to them. We discussed why it’s important we were talking about this (because the interns will be working as a team for each organization) then we played a game which allowed the students to realize the importance of working together. One player was blindfolded, another player could see but not speak and the last player could speak but not see. The purpose of the game was to get the blindfolded group member to locate and pick up an object which was on the pala-pala field. The students really had fun with that game, so much fun we played it twice and everyone changed roles.

The remainder of the class was mostly discussions and the sharing of ideas. We went over the purposes of the internship, the responsibilities of each intern and resources that each intern has access to. Each of these topics were discussed first in pairs and then each pair would give their answer to the whole class. If in the end they had missed an important purpose, responsibility or resource, I would go over that.

Lastly we moved onto “logistics” meaning.. money. Each student will be working 5 days a week meaning 2,000fcfa for lunch. We also had to individually add up transportation costs since students live and work in a variety locations around Buea. Lastly was the internet – this was something we decided would be best if we “see how it goes”.  Because it is likely to vary by week.

On Tuesday I passed by the office of RUWDEC and Z TV to set more concrete goals, discuss internet stipends and to see overall how our interns were doing in their new placements. When I stopped at Z TV, Darios and Ketline were in a very deep discussion about the power of media and the importance it has on social issues. Carl, their boss, was discussing things on social media that went viral because of social media: he specifically mentioned #Bringbackourgirls. These two have a chance to expand their research topic and even be on television!

Blessings and her colleuges were busy working away when I arrived as well. Nelly had prepared and printed a full 4 week program for her activities. It started out with simply learning about the organization, giving an oral presentation on her research and then it moved into writing reports, blog posts and even going into the field to help do sensitization and recruiting for their next initiative “Da Girls”.

Green Cameroon’s director was called out of town during the first week so the interns spent their time with me and the YAN interns. They were allowed a limited amount of internet time so that they could do research on the organization and learn as much as they could without being in the office. The 2nd week, they were scheduled to give a presentation on their findings.

YAN interns were busy as well… but maybe its best if you wait until the next post and hear what they have been up to in their own words
